– Caden Sterns: Well, I had a note ready to talk about how LSU S commit Caden Sterns took a surprise visit to Texas over the weekend, and that the Longhorns were trending but he dropped the recruiting bombshell before you guys had the chance to read that note!

Texas has 8 commitments, including 5 recruits in the Top 200 nationally and Tom Herman has pulled some big upsets in flipping FL WR Justin Watkins fro Florida State, flipped QB Cam Rising from OU, and landing DE Ron Tatum over his home-state Sooners. But flipping Sterns from LSU is the biggest commit of Tom Herman’s tenure at Texas, and here’s why. Sterns is the first elite in-state domino to fall, as he’s the only Top 10 recruit in the state of Texas to make a commitment (next is Atanza Vongor at #14 to TCU). The commitment to Texas sends a message to a lot of the other elite recruits in the state, and that can’t be understated.
Sterns is a complete safety. I like him as more of a ball-hawking deep S and has outstanding ball skills (He also plays WR for Steele and could be a D1 WR). He can also come down the line and hit you. One thing about Sterns is that he still has a slender build but something that will help him is that he plans to enroll early at Texas. – (Andrew)
– Safety Recruiting: Going into the weekend, the Big 3 at safety for Texas in the 2018 class were BJ Foster, Leon O’Neal Jr, and DeMarvion Overshown. Well, with Caden Sterns in the fold that obviously shakes some things up. I continue to feel very good about Texas’ chance with BJ Foster. Lean O’Neal Jr looks Texas A&M bound as of today, and DeMarvion Overshown is a bit of a wildcard as he is still relativity new to the recruiting world but his family is full of Texas fans and the Longhorns would take him for sure.
I know it’s been mentioned that the 2018 DB class is something we haven’t seen in a very long time in terms of the amount of talent at one position, all in the same state. The Big 3 safeties in this class are guys that I can really see as first round picks after 3 years in college barring injuries, and I don’t throw that around very often. Those guys are Caden Sterns, BJ Foster, and Leon O’Neal Jr. You can flip a coin on either one of those guys, and if you land one that would be a home run. – (Andrew)
– Tanner McKee: Texas hosted Centennial (CA) QB Tanner McKee over the weekend along with Sterns. McKee was also at OU on Friday and Texas A&M on Sunday.
McKee told me “It was a really good visit. It felt like a big family while I was there. Coaches were great.” The message was clear to McKee from the Texas coaching staff, “If you want to play at a great school, for a great coach, win, and get a great education, Texas would be a perfect fit.”
As most know McKee is a 2018 recruit but plans to take a 2-year Mormon mission after graduation so he won’t enroll at a school until 2020. He is high on Texas and will cut his list down this summer. – (Andrew)
