Recruiting Event: Last month Texas held a big summer event by the pool that seemed to go over really well the recruits. I’m told that Texas will hold a second summer event later this month, similar to a Friday Night Lights type event. I expect a number of top recruits to make their way to Austin. Also, I’m expecting at least one commit. More on this as the day approaches. – (Andrew)

Team Notes: Spoke with another source regarding summer workouts and the young guys.

Josh Thompson: I asked the source which freshman was most likely to see the field. The answer I was given is Josh Thompson. Obviously this information is based only on where things are now. The pads still haven’t come on. But as I’ve previously noted, the staff seems impressed with Thompson’s ability and work ethic.

Newcomer of the Year: We’ve already remarked on the rave reviews JUCO LB, Gary Johnson has been receiving from our sources. But I spoke with an additional source who went so far to say that Gary Johnson will be the newcomer of the year. The source said that Johnson’s athleticism is truly unique. In fact I was told he runs so well that he can push Duvernay in some races. I was also told that overall he out-tests everyone on the team and tops Texas’ conditioning chart. Johnson is up to around 220 lbs and still has plenty of time to add more good weight. Based on what I was told, it will be very difficult to keep Johnson off the field. If all goes well in summer camp, I expect him and Malik to line up next to each other and be the most athletic linebacker duo in the country.

The Progression of Buechele: It seems Shane Buechele continues to progress which is really good news for Texas. Based on my conversations with folks around the program or those who have seen the new Texas defense, there is a sense that Herman and Orlando will field a stellar defense this year. The concern, at least in my mind, is whether Buechele can take a big enough jump in year two to make the Texas offense potent enough to win in what will be a tough Big 12 (last year the Big 12 routed some teams in the bowl games…this year I expect the conference to be even better).

I’m told that Buechele has had a good summer and it sounds like staff is very excited about Buechele’s continued development as a passer with great accuracy. He clearly isn’t as athletic as the guys Herman has had in the past but what he’s missing in athleticism he makes up for in accuracy. – (Super K)

Bobby Brown: One of Texas’ top defensive line targets is 2018 DE/DT, Bobby Brown (Arlington, TX). Brown was at Alabama for a camp last month and I had a chance to speak to someone on the Alabama side about Brown and what they’re hearing on his recruitment.

I was told that after the camp Brown moved up to the number one defensive line target on Alabama’s board. Apparently he was absolutely unblockable at the camp.

Brown doesn’t talk about his recruiting much so any insight we can get is always welcomed. My source on the Alabama side tells me that Brown is set to announce his decision on Novemeber 2nd. Right now folks on the Alabama side feel very confident. Though I should note that when Saban becomes fixated on a player, as it seems he has with Brown, then many tend to assume said player will end up at Alabama.

I was told by sources on the Alabama side that they are under the impression from Brown and his family that the biggest threats to Alabama are OU and Texas. As many of you may recall, Brown recently tweeted out…

I’m told that visit could happen later this month. – (Super K)
