– Anthony Cook: With a majority of the best players in the Houston area trending towards Texas, people keep asking questions about Anthony Cook. Texas looks to be running #2 in that battle right now behind Ohio State, Clemson is the 3rd team involved here.
Cook wasn’t at Texas’ Heat Wave event earlier this summer, and he won’t be at Texas’ other big recruiting event on July 21st because he will be at Clemson’s “Friday Night Lights” Event. Though I was told by one of Cook’s coaches that he plans to visit Texas the following weekend, and that would be a huge visit for Texas as they haven’t gotten Cook on campus this summer.
Ohio State still holds the lead here, with Texas running 2nd, and Clemson close behind. If Texas lands Cooks teammates in Al’Vonte Woodard and D’Shawn Jamison like I expect them to, that won’t hurt their chances with Cook but it will come down to their play on the field in 2017 in terms of having a shot to land the 5-star. Don’t count Clemson out either, between their National Title, new state of the art football facilities, and putting DB’s into the NFL lately. I wouldn’t overlook the Tigers. – (Andrew)
– Woodard/Jamison: The other part of the Hou. Lamar trio is WR Al’Vonte Woodard and DB D’Shawn Jamison, and unlike Anthony Cook, Texas is in a prime spot to land both of those guys as of today.
Woodard has a commitment date set for the 15th and is down to Texas, LSU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Ohio State. But it would a big surprise if Texas wasn’t the pick next week. Jamison has basically been down to Texas and TCU for awhile now, and he plans to commit in August but doesn’t have a date set just yet.
I was told that both players are set to be in Austin on July 21st for Texas’ recruiting event.
– Jalen Green: Last weekend at The Opening, no player from Texas was talked about more than Heights (TX) CB Jalen Green, and it sounds like he’s made the conversation for the #1 CB in Texas between him and Anthony Cook a little bit more interesting. My take is the same, as I have Cook as the #1 DB in state due to his incredible technique for a HS DB to go along with his other great attributes but he doesn’t have the athletic upside of Green IMO.
The biggest recruiting news from Green at The Opening was when he told the media that Texas A&M was no longer an option for him. That’s big news as the Aggies, who were an early favorite for him were making a strong push with new DB coach Ron Cooper. Schools like LSU and Ohio State are still recruiting Green hard, but Texas is the leader here as of today. I even spoke to someone who was around a lot of the Texas recruits at The Opening and was told “bet they [Texas] get Woodard and Jay Green soon”.
I talked to someone close to Green yesterday and was told he has no visits planned as of right now, but said it wouldn’t surprise them if Green is at Texas for their big July 21st event. – (Andrew)
– Fall Camp Date: Someone asked me recently when fall camp begins for Texas, and I wasn’t 100% sure so I checked. I was told they’re set to get things rolling on July 31st, so mark your calender’s. – (Andrew)
