TFB Short | Defensive Player To Watch

With Big 12 media days coming up it means that football season is approaching. We’ve had a lot of recruiting news over the summer which has been great compared to years past, but we’ve talked less about previewing the 2017 season because of it. Today I want to talk about the defensive player in 2017 that I’m most interested to see for Texas, and that is Sophomore S Brandon Jones.

Jones seemed to lock down one of the starting safety spots this Spring opposite DeShon Elliott, and he has the tools that Texas fans haven’t seen in a safety in a while. Jones has legit 4.4-5 speed, he is a big guy at 6 foot 215 pounds per Texas (came in around 195 last year), and he will hit you. In the past a lot of Texas safeties have seemed to lack either the game breaking speed, ability to make open field tackles, or just flat struggle in coverage. Jones is an upgrade at all of those spots in my opinion compared to guys Texas has had on the back end over the last few seasons.

I was surprised to see the lack of playing time Jones received in 2016, but I don’t think anyone will be saying that in 2017. Now I want to know who the defensive player you all are most interested to see in 2017, and why.

PS: We should be holding a Town Hall this evening.
