Open Post | Weekend, August 4th – 6th (UPDATE: Sat. 5:20 PM)

Cam Rising: I know many of you have heard the rumors (which seem to have been prompted by a 247 Crystal Ball pick) about Cam Rising and Oregon.

I spoke with Rising and his father earlier this week. The conversation was “off the record” so there isn’t much I can share other than to say that Oregon is still actively recruiting Rising. However, contrary to some of what’s “out there”, Rising did not recently take a visit to Oregon. Rising plans on taking an official visit to Texas. They are big fans of Herman and the direction of the program.

Oregon is trying to sell Rising on the idea that they have a greater need than Texas at the QB position. Although, Rising and his father are very aware of the fact that both Buechele and the projected starter at Oregon played last year and are the same age.

It’s also important to keep in mind that Rising has strong family ties to the state of Texas. His grandfather lives in the Houston area. – (Super K)

Bobby Brown: Perhaps best defensive lineman in the state of Texas is Bobby Brown (Arlington, TX). Brown is being pursued by a number of the top programs. He camped at Alabama earlier this summer and according to a source close to the program, he was virtually unblockable.

Brown has visited a number of programs in the past month including Texas, TAMU, OSU and OU.

We spoke with Brown following his final visit and he has let us know that he will announce his decision on November 2nd. Brown also tells us that he has made his decision, or at the very least, has a very good idea of where he’s headed. He did not tell us where but did say that it’s safe to assume that the schools in the running are OU, TAMU, Texas and Alabama.

In the course of my conversations with him and others familiar with his recruitment, I get the sense that Bama and OU are the current teams to beat. However, I have spoken to a source on the Texas side and they feel confident. And I have became less and less prone to doubting Texas’ ability to land any in-state kid. However, it is of note that Brown’s family is originally from SEC territory and I’m told he has some close family members that would like to see him at Alabama.

Prior to his November announcement, Brown is expected to attend a game at Texas this fall. – (Super K)

Corione Harris and Anthony Cook: Just a quick note on the recent offer to Louisiana DB, Corione Harris. We had speculated that the offer to Harris could be connecting to some concerns by Texas that they may be slipping with Cook.

I spoke to a source on the Texas side and was told that the offer was unrelated to Cook at all. In fact, the source indicated that Texas’ feel like they are in a better spot with Cook now than they were a few months ago. – (Super K)

August Recruiting: The month of August started off with a bang when Texas landed a commitment from top JUCO TE, Dominick Wood-Anderson.

Despite the fact that this is a no-contact period, August should prove to be a good month for Texas in recruiting with multiple pieces of good news on the way. – (Super K)

Team Notes: A few notes I’ve heard along with some from around twitter…

*Looks like the experiment with Shackelford at guard is over…

*Herman comes from the Urban Meyer tree. Having attended one of his practices back when he was at Houston, I can tell you, they follow the Urban Meyer practice method of being very violent…all the time. Strong did the same in his first year and it showed with that first year defense. But pulled back the following years.

*Somewhat related to the note above, was asking someone about the projected starting safeties, Deshon Elliot and Brandon Jones. Was told, “they are playing with a lot of aggression…Jones has it figured out”. The second half of that quote was related to the fact that early in his career Jones struggled a bit with being assignment sound; not particularly surprising for such a difficult position and for such a young guy. But I’m told that’s no longer an issue. Source also noted that, it’s hard not to be violent and aggressiveness when you’re coached by Craig Naivar. To put it mildly he’s a vocal coach.

*A couple WR names that have come up are Jerrod Heard and Lil Jordan Humphrey. Collin Johnson has clearly become the number one target. But, I was told that Heard, though always a good athlete, has become even more sudden and explosive off the LOS and in and out of his breaks.

Was also told that Lil Jordan Humphrey has had a good first week of camp and that the Texas staff is using him inside and outside. This staff loves their inside WRs so it’ll be interesting to see if the he find continues to find himself inside more and more as a he does present a big athletic target to Buechele. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (5:20 PM): Texas held had their first scrimmage of fall camp this morning. But it wasn’t your normal scrimmage, it was a more situational scrimmage. At least based on what I was told.

Both QB’s had solid days, and it still looks clear that Shane Bueclele is the #1 with Sam Ehlinger at #2.

WR Reggie Hemphill was back today after missing some time on Thursday and Friday with a migraine. I was also told he had a big TD catch on the afternoon.

Super K mentioned WR Jerrod Heard having a really good summer and start to camp and I heard that continued today.

As it happens in most early camp scrimmages, I was told the defense won the day.

The #1 OL was Williams-Vahe-Shackelford-McMillon-Rodriguez

Not much changes yet on D, with Poona, Nelson, and Roach up front. Then Wheeler, Jefferson, Hughes at LB. Then Hill and Boyd at CB, Elliott and Jones at S, and Locke at nickel. Though things would change as the situation did and they rotated.

RB Kyle Porter continues to take snaps with the 1’s, Chris Warren with the 2’s.

Two freshman working with the 2’s is DE Taquon Graham at SDE, and Josh Thompson at CB.

The only injury seemed to come from S Jason Hall. Tom Herman said he suffered an injury on a hit. I was told it was a minor head/neck injury.
