– Tanner McKee: Super K recently noted one official visitor Texas will host this weekend is Oak Ridge (TX) DE Joseph Ossai. The other they will bring in over the weekend is Centennial (CA) QB Tanner McKee. Most know of McKee’s story, and that even though he is the #3 QB in the nation he’s going to take a two-year Mormon mission after graduating HS. Basically making him a class of 2020 recruit. McKee has a Top 5 of Texas, BYU, Stanford, Alabama, and Washington. This will be his first official visit.
When I asked him what he’s looking forward to this weekend he said “I’m excited to experience game day there. Feel the energy. Also want to see how everything feels with the coaches and players.” McKee will be joined by his Mom, Dad, Aunt, and Uncle on his visit. He says that he’s still in constant contact with the Texas staff, mainly OC Tim Beck. He told me the Texas staff is selling him “On the system and the culture. They think I would be a great fit in their offense. Said they want leaders.”
Right now I’d say Stanford and BYU lead for McKee. The Cardinal offered McKee later than most, but that’s a main offer he was waiting on. And BYU is a school he’s visited the most and is really comfortable with everything in Provo. McKee doesn’t have to sign on NSD because he’s not enrolling in 2018, but he told me that right now he plans to sign his NLI on signing day. – (Andrew)
– Injury Note | Josh Thompson: One player who has missed the last few games due to injury is freshman CB Josh Thompson. He hasn’t played since the San Jose State game due to a meniscus injury he suffered during practice on the week of the USC game. Thompson was a guy that I would’ve liked to see vs USC, because Kris Boyd was suspended for the first quarter of that game. Davante Davis started that game with Boyd out, but I had heard earlier in the year that Thompson was making a push to be the #3 CB on the team. And would’ve been interesting to see if Thompson got the start.
The staff really likes what Thompson brings to the table as a freshman. At the least, he will be a really good depth piece returning, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him get some game action outside of special teams. – (Andrew)
– Casey Thompson: One other recruit who plans to visit Texas this weekend is Newcastle (OK) Texas QB commit Casey Thompson. It will be an unofficial visit for him. Right now Thompson is locked into his Texas pledge. There was a time right after Texas landed QB Cam Rising, and Oregon offered Thompson and Oklahoma started showing some more interest and some felt he might flip. That doesn’t seem like the case now as Oklahoma has their 2018 QB and Thompson isn’t the Top guy on Oregon’s board and he hasn’t shown interest in visiting anywhere but Texas.
I’m interested to see Thompson’s SR film. As of right now I don’t see him as anything more than a depth guy at Texas. He had a huge Sophomore season which led to offers from schools like Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State and others. But he didn’t really improve during his JR season and didn’t have the best performances on the camp circuit heading into his SR season. So there are a lot of people looking at how he performs in 2017, even though he’s at a new school for his senior season.
I will say that I think Thompson is a really good #2 QB in the class with Cam Rising. If they can sign both of those guys, that will be a huge success at the position moving forward and I think they can do that as of today. I’ll have notes on Rising either tomorrow or early next week. – (Andrew)
– UPDATE (1 PM): Texas extended an offer to Huntsville (TX) DE T’Vondre Sweat this afternoon.
— 💪🏽T sweat (@Tvondre_) October 5, 2017
Sweat has been a bit of an under the radar name in the 2019 class. Part of that could be due to him being from Huntsville, not a big TXHSFB city. Though he is slowly picking up some big offers, As Texas, Texas A&M, Michigan, and Penn State are the bigger schools to offer him so far.
