– JP Urquidez: I got a message last night that I wasn’t really expecting. It was from Copperas Cove (TX) OT and Baylor commit, JP Urquidez telling me Texas OL coach, Matt Mattox was coming to visit him. Urquidez told me Texas has been talking to him for about a month since not being in much contact since he made his commitment to Baylor back in April.
I asked Urquidez if he was just listening to Texas or if he was actually interested in Texas despite his 8-month commitment to Baylor and all he said was “it’s serious”. Urquidez committed to Baylor over Texas, Oklahoma, UCLA, and about 20 more schools but said Texas is really the only school trying to pull him away from Baylor. When I asked what is it that’s giving Texas a chance he told me “I always cheered for them growing up and it’s hard to say no to my childhood favorite.” Urquidez doesn’t have a date set but says he will definitely visit Texas in January.
I get the sense JP really likes Texas, I got the same sense talking to him before he committed to Baylor. It seemed the Texas staff backed off of Urquidez some before he committed. So if Coach Mattox and the rest of the Texas staff recruit Urquidez hard until NSD, I feel there is a very solid chance he will end up a Longhorn at the end of the day. – (Andrew)
– Weekend Visitors: Here are some updates from a few of this weekend’s visitors. We will continue to try and get updates from some of the other visitors:
TE Peyton Aucoin: “It was a great visit. I loved spending time with all of the other commits. I really enjoyed talking with Coach Traylor and lot and getting to spend some more time with Coacb Strong.” Aucoin also told me that he will not take any other visits and that he is locked in with Texas. He said he felt like he did his best to recruit some guys, espically his teammate TAMU TE commit Irvin Smith and DT D’Andre Christmas-Giles.
WR Collin Johnson: “I had an amazing time in Austin on my official visit. I enjoyed hanging out with all the recruits, my player host John Burt, and all the other guys. I also got to talk with all the coaches, I’m excited about Coach Gilbert and his new offense!” Johnson told me he plans to be enrolled at Texas on January 15th, 2nd semester classes start on January 19th.
CB Eric Cuffee: “I had a great time. My entire visit was amazing!!! I enjoyed hanging out with the other guys, and my player host Malik Jefferson.” Cuffee still seems to be Texas A&M’s to lose, but Texas did a great job making an impression this weekend.
– Coaches on the Road: As I mentioned above, Texas OL Coach Matt Mattox visited OL JP Urquidez last night. He also visited Belton (TX) OL Zach Shackelford at the same place since they live near each other. Shackelford told me he already knows Mattox as he recruited him while he was at Tulsa.
Coach Brian Jean-Mary made it down to Mesquite before the dead period last night to meet with OT Jean Delance and his mother. When I asked Delance how his visit was he said “GREAAAAT!!!” Take that response however you wish but from everything we’ve heard, we feel good about Texas’ chances with Delance. Even more so now that he’s going to be able to build a relationship with his potential future coach.
Another recruit that was visited last night was Nacgodoches (TX) 5-star S Brandon Jones, who was visited by Coach Jeff Traylor. – (Andrew)
