Open Post | Tuesday, July 5th

– Under The Lights Camp: As many of you know, Texas will hold their Under the Lights event later this month.  This year it will be held on July 23rd. Quite a few top targets will be in attendance. For most of the 2017 recruits it’ll be a chance to be around the staff a little more. They won’t work out.

Some of the visitors that have already confirmed for the camp include:

Baron Browning – I tweeted the following this past weekend regarding the talented LB.

Anthony Cook – An in-state CB who is now one of the most highly sought after defensive backs in the country.

Taquon Graham – Was expected to commit to Texas back in May but decided to push his decision date back. Things could get interesting later this month.

Kobe Boyce – Getting the Texas commit back on campus is critical. Super K has been in touch with Boyce lately and it seems Boyce is certainly keeping his options open. He recently returned from a trip to Iowa and tells us he plans to take additional trips. However, he was given the “ok” from coach Strong to visit schools.

A few others…

Summer Creek (TX) 2018 TE Kenden Jones, has an early offer from Louisiana-Monroe.

China Spring (TX) 2018 OLB/TE Tyrick James, has an early offer from SMU.

San Marcos (TX) ATH Colby Vidrine

Yoakum (TX) 2018 ATH Jordan Moore told me that he and his brother 2018 WR Joshua Moore will “very likely” be there, but just to visit. Both hold Texas offers. – (Andrew)

– Bobby Brown: Texas recently offered Arlington, Lamar (TX) 2018 DT Bobby Brown, who only has 6 offers but has some from the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M. Brown has the talent to be one of the top players in the state of Texas. Brown let me know after Texas offer that he “definitely plans to visit Texas this summer” he just doesn’t have a date set as of today.

Recently I spoke to someone who has seen Brown up close and also had a chance to be around the ultra talented, Myles Garrett and in his opinon Brown compared favorably, “Brown has the most potential of any D-lineman I’ve seen in this area outside of Myles [Garrett]”. – (Andrew)

– Ta’Zhawn Henry: Houston Lamar (TX) 2018 RB Ta’Zhawn Hentry plans to visit Texas on July 21st. He’s a bit under-sized right now but looks to be another very solid player to come out of Lamar. Right now he holds early offers from Houston, Toledo, and Tulsa. – (Andrew)

– Camron Buckley: Cedar Hill (TX) WR Camron Buckley was offered by Texas A&M recently and made his commitment to the Aggies. After Texas offered him at their Under the Lights camp last summer the Longhorns were in the drivers seat to land the Cedar Hill WR. After the new offensive staff came in, they backed off Buckley and never really reassured him of his Texas offer. As I’ve said for a while, Buckley would likely have been a Longhorn if Texas would have pursued him. However it seems he doesn’t quite fit what they are looking for.  – (Andrew)

Xavier Newman: You may have seen by now that Oklahoma extended and offer to 2017 Texas OL commit, Xavier Newman (Desoto, TX). Newman has long wanted an offer from Oklahoma and in speaking to some folks familiar with his recruiting, it does seem that it is may only be a matter of time before he flips to the Sooners. We’ll keep a close eye on this one.

With the signing of Hudson Texas may end up taking two instead of the original three offensive linemen we expected. They have their eyes firmly set on Walker Little as their OT prospect. If Newman does flip they’ll need to find a Center/Guard prospect to replace him. – (Super K)

Thanks for the info. Bill and Spoetzl and I were discussing the apparent pressing need for depth at C on the recent Hudson thread and Bill mentioned an offer had gone out to Creed Humphrey. Any news there?

    • Tom Selleck's Moustache says:

Well he committed to TAMU about a week ago….so not any good news

      • MarkInAustin says:

Well, it’s never final till NSD with Coach. But not any good news, as you wrote.

      • Bill says:

I believe he committed to TAMU before Charlie made the UT offer. So, who knows what’s going on behind the scenes.

Almost all of the UT and TAMU commits will probably want to see how the season plays out anyway, given that both coaches are considered on the hot seat if they have disappointing seasons.

        • Reefer On Two says:

That’s the way I see it, too. No one wants to be part of a regime change unless they’re bringing in a huge name to coach. Maybe not even then.

    • Andrew King says:

Texas offered Humphrey back in April. He visited a few times, once right before he committed to Texas A&M recently. It sounds like Texas finished #2 behind the Aggies in this one.

      • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Really? I thought OU was the pick actually. I was a bit surprised that he chose TAMU.

        • Andrew King says:

Yeah I thought it was a TAMU-OU battle as most of his family are Sooner fans and one of his close friends is committed to TAMU. But we were told after his 2nd Texas visit in June that he was very impressed and that the Longhorns likely finished 2nd here.

      • Spoetzl says:

Any centers on your radar or that of the Texas staff?

  • Tom Selleck's Moustache says:

Any word about Edwin Freeman this summer? Bedford seems to love him, he’s got the speed to play OLB, and he was getting good PT last year prior to he shoulder injury. I’ve got a hunch I’m working on that we may see a lot of him, wheeler, and Malik on the field together with Ant as the MLB, Edwin at the OLB spot, and Malik lined to the field doing all sorts of crazy stuff from the fox spot everyone loves to speculate on. The staff has teased that Malik is going to be outside a lot more this year so I’m wondering if that may be how it happens

    • ACreativeUsername says:

im pretty firmly in the camp of Malik not being in one set position. Placing him in one area will allow people to avoid or gameplan around him. The staff will likely move him between various LB spots to keep our looks fresh. And I don’t see Freeman being the OLB considering we havent seen or heard much of him throughout all of spring practice

I believe the spring game lineup of Wheeler-Malik-Hughes (at FOX) sticks, but Malik is swapped around when either people sub in or we change alignments and packages

      • MarkInAustin says:

And Wheeler is not as fast as MJ [no one playing college LB is as fast as MJ] but stands up well to the rush. I think Wheeler will often be at the ILB spot.

I too believe that Freeman, healthy, will be a contributor, at OLB. Also, Cole was pretty tough against Baylor and will get to play ILB. Coach had some admiring words for Cam, but that would be icing on the OLB cake.

TX has great depth here and good skill, without even mentioning the Foxes, who become LBs on shifts, and without even mentioning the three FR who will become trustworthy, perhaps by conference, maybe later in the year [Shark, Fowler, Roach].

To be clear, I completely agree with ACUname and rec’d his comment.

        • ACreativeUsername says:

Agreed, a lot of LBs will play and we will need all of them to contribute and excel. The starters seem set to me, but our backups will see a lot of time and should be great

    • Andrew King says:

Freeman is freak athlete at LB. Saw him a lot in HS at Arl. Bowie and his biggest issue at Texas is the ability to stay healthy. If he has a good summer i think he’s the top LB behind Jefferson and Wheeler. If he can’t stay healthy, there are a lot of talented young LB’s that I think will overtake him

  • Backtothetop-UT says:

Morning guys, quick question. I know its hard for these guys to stay commited sometimes but doesnt Strong let them know that they dont have to committ but if they do then he expects them to stay? I say this because we have 2 potential guys flipping in boyce and newman and it just seems like they were waiting on a certain offer to committ to them but yet they still committed to us early. Just wondering how that could of happened, maybe they didnt think theyd get the offer they wanted…

    • MarkInAustin says:

Frankly, this coach who is the all time champion of obtaining flips and late pledges cannot be seen as denying HS 17 YOs their chance to look at everything out there, whether they have committed to UT or not. He does not consider the commitment to be a firm obligation because it is not. UT has no obligation in return.

Thus we fans are simply going to have to get used to UT showing to be 34th in recruiting the week before NSD and then rising to top tier status at the end.

      • C_Alan_C says:

Yes. Although I doubt we’ll see as dramatic a finish as last year. If we do well on the field, Strong probably won’t be encouraging recruits to keep things on the downlow to avoid negative recruiting.

        • officially known as number 2 says:

Can’t see too many people in the college football world liking Charlie too much, if he has 5 more so commits waiting till NSD to announce to his school, but then it’s not about people liking you.

      • sdtitan says:

We also have to get ready for 2017 to be lower ranked simply because of numbers. The rankings are driven by class size more than player rating. Therefore a class of 19 will, ipso facto, be ranked lower than a class of 24.

      • officially known as number 2 says:

That’s awesome. Have other programs paranoid.

    • The Truth says:

I think he lets them know they don’t have to commit, but some end up doing so likely from an adrenaline rush or liking the idea of being a Texas commit and the prestige of it. It does slightly surprise me that some would decommit, because in the early goings, it seems like strong only takes guys that are going to be longhorns almost no matter what.

In the long run, these things will sort themselves out. Not gonna worry about it just yet.

    • Andrew King says:

Strong doesn’t push guys to commit in July. With Boyce, Texas is his dream school and anted to shut it down right away. One thing that has Boyce intrigued about a school like Iowa is that a lot of his close friends like RB Eno Benjiman and WR Galvin Holmes are committed to the Hawkeyes. I don’t expect him to flip to them but Strong let him know he can take some trips…

On Newman, landing back to back huge OL classes is what’s hurting here. Texas looks to be filling the need of having to play OL very early after this 2017 class. That seems to be pushing him to look around a bit

  • IdaHorn52 says:

Any news on offensive guys Locksley and McNeal? Both solid players that need to find a place to get on the field.

    • Andrew King says:

Not too much right now. McNeal can find his way into the rotation but if Duvernay and Jonnson are the real deal like most expect them to be, he could make it harder for him. Needs to show reliable hands, he lacked that in the Spring.

Don’t expect to see Locksley on the field in 2016 at QB, and it doesn’t look like a move to WR could happen until Sam comes in.

  • HelloThere... says:

When does practice start? I also think Newman flips. Sad, because I think he can play behind Zach.

  • RoofinReality says:

    Good stuff.
Hoping Browning and Graham see the train and decide to jump on soon.

    • Andrew King says:

Getting both on campus is huge. Graham told me that he has no plans to commit right now and Browning will likely be around December since he’s and early enrollee.

      • RoofinReality says:

Hoping they see the train and decide to jump on with us.
Hoping they see the train and decide to jump on with us.

    • UTHorn1989 says:

I’m gettin’ nervous with all these guys committing early! ;0)

      • RoofinReality says:

I get your point. But we’re in great shape with vast majority of our recruits who’ve committed. So, I think we’ll be fine.
Winning 8 regular season games and we’re going to be sending high prospects elsewhere because we’ll have elite players coming.

      • officially known as number 2 says:

Like every season there are quite a few good ones not committed. Never settle, go after the one you treasure, and enjoy the process. In the end, the fruit will be much sweeter. It’s like a relatiinship, just because e’erybody married before you, doesn’t mean it’s time to settle…

  • T. Fonzy says:

I’m convinced we’re losing both Kobe (iowa) and Newman (ou). But I saw a tweet from Hines I really liked.

  • Bob Brewski says:

What I like most about Bobby Brown is that he doesn’t need permission and makes his own decisions. That’s his prerogative.

  • Zach says:

Where are we looking at RB and Safety? At RB Dobbins and Benjamin look really solid in their commitments, and Toneil Carter looks like a lock for Georgia. At safety, Okudah seems like a lock for tOSU, Delpit is 100% to LSU and Tuck is an academic risk and commited to Aggie. Do we have shots at flipping any of these guys or are we going to have to take a flyer out on an under the radar guy?

    • Andrew King says:

AT RB, Dobbins is still their guy. IF 5-star RB Cam Akers commits to Ohio State that would be the thing that could very well make JK decommit. And Texas is likely his #2 right now but as of today he’s 100% solid to tOSU.

    • UTfan85 says:

I don’t think Dobbins is solid at all (decommit watch if Cam Akers commits to OSU like he’s expected to) and UT could make things interesting with Eno if they decide to offer. I’d put money on Tucker flipping if he clears everything up

      • IdaHorn52 says:

I think Dobbins just wanted to commit somewhere because he wasn’t being coddled enough by our staff at the time. I am convinced he will flip eventually.

        • UTfan85 says:

I agree that OSU is a placeholder, but don’t know if he’ll be a Longhorn

    • Ez28 says:

Estell sounds like he is coming in as an athlete that will start out as S.

    • MissingBarry says:

Charlie Strong is the coach, remember? We have a shot at flipping anyone! 😉

  • UTfan85 says:

So basically we have 2 solid commits right now and one isn’t a lock to qualify. Seen it for 3 years in a row now, but I can’t help but be a little frustrated lol. Hurry up football season when we can talk about something besides recruiting

    • Spoetzl says:

      We have seven commitments.

      • UTfan85 says:

Correct. I would consider 2 of them “solid”. As in they’re a lock to sign. Could see all of Newman, Boyce, Tennison, Estell, and Miller flipping.

        • MissingBarry says:

This is the best reason not to pay attention to recruiting until NSD is close. You’re choosing to be frustrated by putting so much stock into things this early!

    • Andrew King says:

These recruits want to take visits, that’s how it is and that’s their right. Gotta keep recruiting these guys till February and every coach knows that.

I can see how it can be frustrating though.

  • Horns20 says:

Newman is at the Opening this weekend with a whole lotta OU Commits and only 1 (Sam) committed to UT. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a flip in the next couple of days but with Urquidez and Hudson likely to play guard I don’t blame him.
As for Graham, is he looking around elsewhere at all? Or is it still mostly Texas but waiting to commit?

    • Andrew King says:

TCU is the other main school for Graham but right now it looks like Texas is still in a very favorable spot with him.

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

The good thing is that he’s on the team with Sam, so that MIGHT help. But according to every outlet I’ve seen, he’s as good as gone.

  • IdaHorn52 says:

Any word on the leanings of OL Filiaga?

    • Chris 45 says:

Most of the rumblings I’ve heard are to USC. However, since he’s attending Aledo high maybe he checks us out some more.

  • NYC Longhorn says:

Stidham apparently planning on withdrawing from Baylor and enrolling at a Juco for the year… the house of cards just keeps collapsing up in Waco.

    • MarkInAustin says:

Bears think he is going to Blinn, then aTm, following Kendall Briles.

      • Unofficial Longhorn says:

That may not be a bad set up for him. They certainly need a QB in College Station, so he might be able to make something happen. Good luck to him.

      • Spoetzl says:

Devonaire Clarington should be there (Blinn) as well.
