– Since 1986 the Jim Thorpe Award, which was named in honor of multi-sport athlete Jim Thorpe, has been awarded to the top defensive back in college football. The Longhorns have taken home the award on two occasions in back to back years with Michael Huff and Aaron Ross in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

This year, Senior defensive back, Kris Boyd, has been named to the Thorpe Award Preseason watch list.
Boyd, who is a fourth-year defensive back, has played in 37 games and made 20 career starts. He was named second team All-Big 12 by the Associated Press following last year. Boyd was rated among the top 10 cornerbacks in the nation as a senior in high school and should he be more consistent this season, he could certainly see himself remain on the list as it shrinks as the season progresses.
