Commitment Analysis | Grad Transfer DB Darion Dunn
– D.T.

Texas landed their first Graduate Transfer for the 2021 season when they were able to convince McNeese State Cornerback Darion Dunn to flip his commitment from N.C. State to the Longhorns.

What’s Texas getting in Dunn?

Ranking: Dunn was lightly recruited out of his small hometown in Louisiana before signing with the Cowboys in 2016.

Size: 6’1 195

Stats: 1st Team All-Southland, 42 tackles, 11 PBU’s, 5 INT’s

Projected Position at Texas: Cornerback (Field)

Player Comparison: Bryce Hall (Virginia 2016-2019, New York Jets 2020 – Present)

Analysis: First things first, Dunn has legitimate size and is an elite athlete. He’s the reigning Southland Conference Champion in the 60M. He will arrive at Texas as an experienced, battle-tested player. He shows some ball skills that most Cornerbacks lack. He has rare size, length, and speed that coaches covet at the position. The only real question about Dunn is what he will look like with the step up in competition.

Dunn has been on the radar of the Senior Bowl committee and his name is one that will be familiar to NFL circles when the 2021 season rolls around. Dunn is expected to compete for a starting position in the spring. I’m excited about this pick up and I believe that Texas fans should be as well. With Josh Thompson and D’Shawn Jamison announcing their returns for 2021, I think you all can figure out who this move could impact the most.

Instant Impact Rating (1-10): 7. You don’t take Grad Transfers unless they’re going to play.

Highlights:

TE Cade Brewer to Return for 2021 Season
– CJ Vogel

Texas senior tight end Cade Brewer has announced he will return for the 2021 season via Twitter.

The tight end room is a loaded one with Jared Wiley’s emergence, as well as Brayden Liebrock, Malcolm Epps and Gunnar Helm joining the mix this summer.

More on the Portal Note
– Super K

As you know by now, on Friday I posted an insider note (here) saying:

***Haven’t gotten the ok from my source to release the name but am told another entrant to the portal is likely to come in the next few days. Likely Monday or Tuesday.

***Player is a freshman. I’m told he hasn’t let the coaches know but does already have a spot and has begun moving out. So, while the coaches may be able to convince him to stay, I don’t imagine it will be easy.

I have been told that said player has spoken with the coaches and it sounds like he has decided to transfer, anyway. The player is Xavion Alford. If he completes the process then his likely destination is USC.

Don’t read too much into this transfer. Xavion was recruited by Naivar and with the new one-time transfer rule, this makes sense for him.

Will confirm once this goes through (or obviously if we hear he changes his mind).

Denzel Okafor to Return in 2021
– CJ Vogel

Senior offensive lineman Denzel Okafor has announced he will return in 2021.

Okafor joins Josh Thompson, Cade Brewer and Brenden Schooler as seniors opting to return for another year of Longhorn Football.

The options for the Longhorns up front will be a plenty next season. Though, the staff still awaits the decision from its biggest prize, Derek Kerstetter.
